Translation Fees:

  • 5,000 YEN for the first document.
  • 4,000 YEN for each additional document.

For UK citizens residing in Japan, the following documents are required, along with estimated translation costs for two UK civilians. Please note that each village, town, city, and ward office has specific requirements that must be researched beforehand:

  • Affirmation of Marital Status 2 pages (x2, English to Japanese): 17,000 YEN
  • Passport (x2, English to Japanese): 8,000 YEN
  • Birth Certificate (x2, English to Japanese): 8,000 YEN
  • Japanese Marriage Application (Completion in Japanese): 4,000 YEN
  • Japanese Marriage Certificate (Back to English): 4,000 YEN

If you’re planning to get legally married in Japan while on vacation, each village, town, or city office has its own specific requirements for foreigners. These rules can vary depending on the location, and we handle the research by contacting the local offices directly.

While many of the requirements are similar to those listed, there can be variations, such as additional documents or different turnaround times for issuing marriage certificates. Customers often request translations of both styles of Marriage Certificates, so we’ve included that in the example below (A4 and B4 sizes):

Please note that in some cases, the B4-sized Marriage Certificate may not be issued on the same day. We will arrange for it to be shipped to our office by the city, and in turn, we will ship it to your home country.


Planning a Vacation Marriage in Japan: How to Get Started

Step 1: Choose Your Dates Decide on the dates for your vacation to Japan and select the specific day you plan to submit your documents to the city or ward office. This step is crucial whether you’re planning a one-week or two-week stay.

Step 2: Select Your Location Choose the area where you’d like to get married. For example, if you choose Kyoto, narrow down a specific part of Kyoto and choose a hotel in that area. This will serve as your temporary residence, which is a requirement for marriage registration in Japan.

Step 3: Contact Us Once your dates and location are confirmed, get in touch with us. We’ll coordinate with the appropriate city or ward office to confirm the requirements for international marriage based on your nationalities and the local regulations.


How to Plan Your Marriage Vacation in Japan for UK Citizens

One-Week Trip:

  • Monday: Start with your appointment at the British Embassy or Consulate in Japan to notarize your Affirmation of Marital Status.
  • After Appointment: Take a photo of the notarized document and send it to us. We will prepare and send all necessary documentation to your hotel via Letter Pack Express, which takes 36 to 48 hours to arrive.
  • Thursday: Submit all the required documents to the local city office.
  • Friday: Collect your marriage certificate from the city office, as it is usually issued the day after submission.

Two-Week Trip (Recommended):

  • First Week: Schedule your appointment at the British Embassy or Consulate for any convenient day during your first week to notarize your Affirmation of Marital Status.
  • After Appointment: Take a photo of the notarized document and send it to us. We will dispatch your completed documentation to your hotel, which will arrive within 36 to 48 hours.
  • Second Week: You have more flexibility with time. Submit the documents to the city office up to Thursday, and collect your marriage certificate the following day.

Book your appointment with the UK Embassy in Japan for Notary services of the Affirmation of Marital Status ASAP as they don’t have lots of openings.
